Caught

Main fishing methods used in Malta include drifting long lines and bottom otter trawls.

Availability

It is usually available during the summer months.

Facts

When caught the Piper Gurnard makes a croaking noise similar to a frog, which is why they have been given their onomatopoeic name, gurnard. It is able to grunt or growl by the use of muscles found within its swim bladder, and this is believed to aid in keeping schools together.

Our suggestion

fish for tomorrow recommends avoiding this fish. There is a lack of data available for it as well is caught using harmful fishing methods, especially the use of bottom otter trawls. Eating immature fish or those caught between May and July during breeding season should especially be avoided.
